Good Morning Cape Coral Employees, Physicians, Volunteers and Auxilians…
Getting Right to the Point
A special thanks to President, Karen Fortin and our Cape Coral Hospital Auxiliary who donated the fountain for our lake in front of Women’s Care – Birthing Suites. It is also lit up at night – right now in red for Christmas and New Year’s. As I stated last week, these donations and efforts help provide more healing spaces and do not have an economic impact on our salaries, benefits, equipment and clinical progress.
Exceptional Care Coordination
· I want to say thank you to all the staff at Cape Coral Hospital as I was admitted through the emergency room for what was later told to me was a TIA or a mini-stroke and from time I arrived at emergency room, assigned to room and then discharged after many tests the service received from all I came in contact with was outstanding. After this service I wondered why our President thinks he can improve our health system as it was outstanding with all the treatment I received.
Nurses and all others on the 3rd floor at the hospital did an outstanding job on any services I required as well as all lab and testing people did their job in professional manner. If you need services of hospital then I recommend Cape Coral Hospital and all there staff as they do an outstanding job. John
· I’d like you to tell all these nurses, doctors, CNA’s, Transporters and the cafeteria workers that I hold them in the highest esteem – They demonstrate “above and beyond” compassion, courtesy and professionalism. Thank you – each and every one for your efforts. I want you to know that I appreciated it; I’ll never forget your courtesy. Marilyn
· Congratulations to our Vascular Access Nursing Team, Susan Ogden, RN, VA-BC, Kathey Koszulinski, BS, VA-BC, Rick Pino, RN, VA-BC and Rima Stevens, RN, VA-BC for receiving their certification.
· Congratulations to Jessica Lindsey for being accepted into the Master’s program at Walden University.
· Keiser University sonography class awarded the Clinical Site Experience award to Cape Coral Hospital. Congratulations Christine Dold and Lynda Knox.
· Congratulations to the following who earned their Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN): Amy Hiteman, Dairia Moore, and John Bruewer
· Our Strategies in alignment with the LMHS Strategic Plan include:

o Deliver and Exceptional Patient Experience
o Dedicated to Highly Engaged Work Force
o Dedicated to Highly Engaged Medical Staff
o Committed to Financial Sustainability through Operational Efficiencies and System-wide Growth
o Committed to engaging our Community and providing and Optimal Healing Environment
After giving more thought to these strategies I realized we need to intentionally speak to our efforts to engage our community and provide an optimal healing environment using Samueli Institute’s framework.
I want to hear from you…
What community activities are you involved with where you represent Cape Coral Hospital and LMHS?
What organizations do you or your department partner with to advance our community?
Is there anyone or any organization you think we should partner with to improve our community?
We would like to wish each and every one of you a very safe and healthy holiday season. Thank you all for your continued support and engagement.
Nancy Ellis serves as one of our CNAs. She was asked to provide the Pinning Ceremony Speech as she just completed the 2012 Edison Nursing Program. This afternoon she discussed how we can raise the level of professionalism for CNAs and how we ensure they are respected and an equally contributing member of our care team. I enjoyed and wanted to share Nancy's speech:
To all who have joined us here today, our class is deeply appreciative to our entire Edison nursing faculty here at Edison as well as our family and friends. These last two and a half years have been filled with major ups and downs. During this time we have relied heavily on each other and especially our family and friends. Only those who have been personally vested in our journey can fully comprehend the impact it has had on all of us. We all realize we didn't travel this journey alone. You all went through it with us and the success we feel today is your success as well. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your sacrifices made to ensure we could be standing here today.
I talked about major ups and downs. Some of you have come to realize that these are simple words yet mean so much. One day we feel confident and ready to provide the best nurisng care available. The next day we are looking in the mirror and scared to death that we are making the biggest mistake of our lives. It is during these times we question our knowledge, confidence and our time and our families time vested in this endeavor. It is also during these times that our instructors, friends, and family have had to suffer and help build us up. Everyone standiing up here today has a deep passion for the care of others. That common bond has held us together no matter how tough things have gotten. It is an honor as I look at each one of them to stand here with them today and be in their presence and now our profession. I would like to personally thank our class leader, Candi Mason, for keeping us on track with the who, what, where and whens of our program.
As mentioned, one day we are majorly up and the next day majorly down. That is why when choosing our guest speaker for today we found it fitting to choose Dr. Susan Wells. Dr. Wells has spent the majority of her nursing career in psychiatric nursing and has instructed most of us during our nursing career. She has listened to many of our woes whether instructing us or not, during these two and a half years.
Thank you Nancy and congratulations!

Good Afternoon Cape Coral Employees, Physicians, Volunteers and Auxilians…
Getting Right to the Point
It’s 12/12/12 and great things are happening! We are making mindful and thoughtful decisions to support our healing spaces as a center for health & wellness. Please know these do not have an economic impact on your salary or benefits, our clinical programs or equipment/supply needs. Please let me know if you ever have these concerns.
Creating an OHE (Optimal Healing Environment) for you and others is worth our time and effort. As caring people, caring for people we are responsible for the health and well-being of ourselves so we can be our best and take care of the patients and families we serve.
Kudos
· Thank you to Mike Smith, our Information Systems leadership and support team for all your work leading to a successful EPIC upgrade. I also want to thank Joanny Odorizzi, Tammy Helbert and our evening team for getting us through this upgrade. Great team effort!
· Congratulations to Sue Ogden, RN who passed the AVA national certification and now is RN, VA-BC. Sue is part of our Vascular Access Nursing Team and our first team member to become nationally certified.
· Congratulations to Sandra Wharton, System Director Medical Staff Services who is celebrating her 40th Anniversary with the Lee Memorial Health System.
I wanted to share some letters and comments we have received for the Outpatient Department and Patient Business Services. These reflect our efforts as a healing environment:
· I was running late for my MRI. Having a very stressful day, Veronica LaForgia greeted me at the check-in desk and was very understanding and tried to calm me as I was anxious about being late. Peggy Parker met me at the registration desk and was extra speedy to get me checked in on time. Both women were very pleasant!
· Lisa Mena walked right up to me to offer her help while I was standing at the check-in counter. She was very pleasant and helpful and answered all of my questions. She was very professional!
· Dear Mary Wandrey, I just wanted to thank you for all your kindness in helping me with all of my billing questions on my hospital bills. You’re such a nice person; I should say a wonderful person. Thanks again Mary.
I want to hear from you…
How do you think we could be more mindful and thoughtful in our approach towards patient experience?
Thank you all for your support, engagement and ongoing pursuit of exceptional care coordination.
Regards,
Scott

Good Morning Cape Coral Employees, Physicians, Volunteers and Auxilians…
Getting Right to the Point
We need your assistance in developing your department’s operational plan. Last week, I sent out the follow-up notes from our Advance.
One of our 5 strategies states:
“Dedicated to a highly engaged workforce.”
Please work with your Managers and Directors to determine priorities for this strategy. Utilize the feedback from this year’s Employee Engagement Survey. It’s healthy to foster “respectful tension” with your colleagues as you continue to make your work environment an exceptional place for you, your co-workers and our patients.
Our Purpose
Serve as our community’s premier hospital and center for health & wellness by providing an Optimal Healing Environment focused on health, prevention, healing and Connectivity.
Connectivity is intentionally capitalized given the importance of consistently reconnecting with our community and each other.
Exceptional Care Coordination
Over this coming year, we are looking to enhance and expand our cardiac and stroke services. We are focused on improving patient flow where we have already made great strides. We are also exploring options to expand our Women’s Health Surgical Services. You will hear me reference our Dyad Management Model which reflects a co-leadership among physicians, nurses and other clinical leaders. This leadership will provide a balanced perspective in support of our clinical vision.
I want to hear from you…
Our clinical vision is supported by our Optimal Healing Environment by enhancing our culture, caring and medical care.
How do you foster “respectful tension” in your area to enhance culture, caring and medical care?
Thank you all for your support, engagement and ongoing pursuit of exceptional care coordination.
Regards,
Scott
