Congratulations to everyone – we have a very good start to our CPOM implementation and it will only get better.  Thank you Mike Smith, Dr. Carracino and our amazing IT Team.

 

·       This week I have other exciting news to share.  Cape Coral Hospital has been selected as the pilot site for the System’s ED Admission to Inpatient Discharge value stream improvement project!   Key aspects of creating an optimal healing environment include meeting the healthcare needs of our community, delivering high quality care, excelling in patient satisfaction through better patient experiences, and making the delivery of care a satisfying process for physicians, staff, and volunteers through collaboration.   I’m pleased to tell you this initiative is aimed at doing all of these things. Two improvement teams, consisting of frontline physicians, nurses, management, and support staff have been selected.

 

The first team is the ED Admission Improvement Team.  This team has already held its formal kick-off meeting.   Mary Paredero, ED Director, will facilitate the work of this team with the Lean Transformation Office assisting.  Our key goals will be to reduce ”Door-to-Doc”  time, reduce “left without being seen” and “left without treatment” percentage to less than 1% of all ED patients, reduce bed assignment  to inpatient admission time, and improve patient experience.

 

The second improvement team has a similar make-up.  This team will be called the Inpatient Discharge Improvement Team.  The key goal will consist of achieving 11 discharges by 11:00 AM, or 33% of our total daily discharges.  This goal will improve patient satisfaction with the discharge process, and positively affect length of stay.  In addition, by discharging those patients that are ready to safely go home in the morning, we will improve patient flow throughout the hospital, which will complement the work of the ED Admission Improvement Team.

 

The entire value stream initiative will be front-line driven.   Part of the journey toward a Lean Transformation includes creating an army of problems solvers and lean thinkers that learn by doing.   In this culture good ideas percolate up the chain of command under a consensual leadership structure. 

 

Such an approach fosters an environment of respect and support; and encourages more intentional and purposeful efforts from those who have the greatest impact on the care our patients receive. The success of this initiative will depend greatly on your input and participation.  The Lean Transformation team will look forward to engaging with you and your colleagues.   I look forward to sharing progress as this process moves forward throughout the summer.

 

·       Come join us for a BBQ Celebration TODAY in the Courtyard as we Celebrate Hospital Week!  At 12:15pm, please join us in singing “SWEET CAROLINE” (as committed by Steve Kessinger).

o    Lunch will be served from 11:00am – 2:00pm in the Courtyard

o    Dinner/evening shift will be served from 4:30 - 6:30pm in the Courtyard

o    3rd Shift (Morning of May 16th) 1:00 – 3:00am in the Cafeteria

Our FY13 HCAHPS goal is 75% - 77%.  Of course, long term we want it to consistently be above 90th%.

 

ED responsiveness of staff is up 11%                          

ED assessment of patient is up 12%

3W is up 5%

Radiology is up 11%

 

Kudos to those scoring 75% or better under Press Ganey Survey:

·       ICU (80%)

·       Respiratory Therapy (79%)                            

·       Transport (83%) up 8%                                  

·       Surgery (79%) up 12%

·       Mom/Baby (74%)

HAPPY NURSES WEEK!  Since 1953 the celebration of Nurses Week is a time for reflecting on the rich sense of community that draws us together as professionals and sustains us as we engage in the practice of nursing.  Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers.

 

In honor of our outstanding nurses we will be having a luncheon and award ceremony Wednesday, from 11 - 2pm and on Thursday, 1 – 3am.

Cape Coral Hospital was very excited this week because we were fortunate enough to participate in the delivery of triplets for a local family.  This is the first set of triplets born at Cape Coral Hospital through “gentle cesarean” procedure. This may be one of the first deliveries in the country where all three babies were able to be placed skin to skin with mother after their delivery and all three of these babies actually nursed on the operating table!  The babies weighed in at 5 pounds 9 ounces, 5 pounds 3 ounces, and 5 pounds 10 ounces!

During a gentle cesarean the baby is placed directly on the mother’s chest right after birth. The surgical team completes the operation in silence, creating a calming environment for baby and mother to bond. The procedure has taken off since it was introduced at Cape Coral Hospital last year. Approximating a natural setting requires adjustments in the operating room so mom has access to her baby, or in this case babies!  Although this sounds like something that should automatically happen, in most hospitals across the United States, the babies born by cesarean section often have to wait for an hour or more to be held by their mothers.  The nurses and physicians on the Family Birth Suites at Cape Coral Hospital have worked very hard in the last year to make the Gentle Cesarean the norm and to allow mothers who give birth to babies by cesarean section to hold their babies in the Operating Room.  The success of the program lead to us being able to offer this option for this very special mother with her triplets!

Triplet births are very rare, particularly those conceived without the use of fertility aids:

· The probability of a given birth resulting in triplets, without fertility aids is one in 8,000

· According to the CDC and the National Vital Statistics Report, the number of triplet births in 2010 in the U.S. was 5,153 (the most recent data available).

· This is the third set of triplets born in the 36-year history of Cape Coral Hospital the first set of mixed triplets, two girls and one boy. (The first set was all boys and second set all girls).  Mother is resting and her babies were all deemed very healthy by their pediatrician!   Welcome to the world, Brooke, Benjamin and Brielle!

  • In preparation for CPOM, the “Relaxation Room” has returned to CCH for staff by popular request.  The room will be open May 1 thru May 30 for all shifts.  You will find it and some wonderful massage chairs in the 4th Floor Conference Room.  Again, many thanks to Anna Marie McCarthy and Leaders, IS and Doug MacGregor from Arts in Healthcare for assistance in making this happen.  ENJOY!

 

  • LMHS Cisco Telephone System is scheduled to be upgraded the evening of May 1st.  Cape Coral Hospital – May 1, 10pm to 12:00am.

Getting Right to the Point

By now we have all heard of the devastating Boston Marathon tragedy.  In today’s Wall Street Journal, one article states “At stake in this race was human life.  Within five minutes of the explosion nearly every victim had been wheeled to a massive medical tent.  The efficiency of the rescue reflected careful planning, heroic execution and elements of good fortune.”  I’d say, it is very symbolic of our patriotism and leader in all of us.

 

I was reading a quote from an article, What Leaders do: “They don’t make plans; they don’t solve problems; they don’t even organize people.  What leaders really do is prepare organizations for change and help them cope as they struggle through it.”  Thank you all for your leadership as we prepare for CPOM, DNV, end of the “Season” and work through our everyday stresses and struggles.  This is why we need everyone’s collective support.

A message from a patient…

 

My husband and I wanted to express our gratitude for the excellent service and care we received from the obstetrical nurses assigned to us during our stay in the birth suites.  In every instance, they were both compassionate and efficient.  The spectrum of emotions that is on display during delivery is a wide one, from extreme joy to extreme pain, and they were right there with us through all of it.  Please extend our appreciation to all of them for their hard work, professionalism and kindness (Amy, Betsy, Bonnie, Jen, Jill, Melinda, Amanda, Jackie and Betty).  We would like to express a special thank you to Jill and Betty for offering great practical advice, genuinely listening to our concerns, and easing our fears.  We also cannot say enough about Delilah, the lactation specialist, her expertise was invaluable in ensuring that our baby begin breast feeding successfully before we left the hospital.

 

We would also like to thank the volunteers that work to assist your staff.  We were given a thorough tour of the floor in advance by one of your volunteers.  And others refilled my ice water early in the morning so quietly to not make a disturbance. 

 

We are so glad we chose your hospital.  We commend you on having an exceptional staff and running a first-rate operation.  Sincerely, Veronica and Jose
